2019 50 Book Reading Challenge

My daughter and I were visiting yesterday about how many books she had read in 2018. She read 31 books and as much as I hate to admit it, that is significantly more than I read. I have an endless supply of books at my fingertips and I did not make enough time to read.

So we decided to challenge each other to read 50 books in 2019. It is only the 2nd of January and I am almost done with 2 books this year. So I am on track but I have a little problem when I read. . .when I start a book, I finish a book (and don’t take much time to breathe, or cook, or clean). So yesterday, I read and read and read. I did cook supper and take down Christmas decorations, but I might have stayed up a little too late.

We would love to have you join us in our 2019 Book Challenge! We know that 50 books is a lot and we don’t want the number to discourage you.

You can set your own goal if you want. We are challenging ourselves to read more and we want to encourage you to read more in 2019, too!

We have created a Facebook group for the challenge that you can join to encourage each other, share book recommendations and more.

We will be sharing the latest books that will be published, book reviews and more. Here is a document to record your list.

Here are some tips to keep you on track this year.

  • Read books you like! There are so many books, you should not feel like you have to finish a book that you don’t enjoy. Put it down and pick up a new one.

  • Don’t Stress about the number, any books count, just challenge yourself to read more.

  • When you sit down at night with your phone, put it away and pick up a book instead.

  • Read outside of your favorite genre. We can help you find great books that we know you will love.

  • Join at anytime throughout the year.

Are you a member of our book loyalty program? If you are not, ask about it the next time you come in for discounted books. If you are not from Milbank and see books you want to buy, let us know and we can ship books to you.

Don’t forget to join our Facebook Group and join the fun.

Whimsy Recommends: Christmas Books

Christmas Book Table

One tradition that I started when my girls were little was to buy new Christmas books each holiday season. We have a lot of favorites in our collection. When they were younger we would wrap them up and use them as a countdown to Christmas, reading one book each night.

We have a lot of great books to choose from for all ages at Whimsy this year. Below are some great options for you.

For the littlest ones:

Don’t Push the Button! Christmas Adventure: The super funny Don’t Push the Button! book has a awesome new Christmas edition. It’s almost Christmas and Santa is coming, so whatever you do…DON’T PUSH THE BUTTON!

Itsy Bitsy Christmas: You’re Never Too Little for His Love: This board book is great for kids of all ages. Do you ever feel like you are too small or too ordinary? This is just how Itsy and Bitsy feel. When these two charming little mice hear that a King is coming to Bethlehem, they set off to find Him. Along the way, they are met with discouraging words telling them they are too little and unimportant for any king. Just when Itsy and Bitsy begin to believe they really aren't big enough for the new King, they learn that Christ the King has indeed come for everyone.

Llama llama Jingle Bells: In Llama Llama Jingle Bells, little llama and his friends give gifts, sing songs, and decorate cookies. It’s a very merry holiday indeed!

The Nutcracker: First Stories Push Pull Slide The Nutcracker is an interactive book that tells the Nutcracker story for the first time to little ones.

Twas the Night Before Christmas: This is a cute version of Twas the Night Before Christmas that tells about what the Mouse was doing when everyone else is sleeping.

Countdown to Christmas: A Book that can also be used as an ornament or gift tag this Christmas. Countdown the presents and see what is inside.

Jingle Baby: For truly the littlest ones on your list we have a special Indestructible Christmas Book, Jingle Baby. This is a wonderful first Christmas book for baby that they cannot ruin. They can chew it and it won’t rip!

Baby Touch and Feel Merry Christmas: Little ones love touch and feel books and this Christmas version will not disappoint. From Jingle Bells to Santa’s beard, they will love the textures to touch in this book.

Bad Kitty Does NOT Like SNOW and Splat the Cat and the Snowy Day Surprise: These books are not Christmas books, but fit the season very well. Bad Kitty includes stickers inside and Splat the Cat is a Lift-the-Flap book.

How to Catch Santa: After waiting for days and days and days, it’s finally Christmas Eve. And that’s when you can try to catch Santa. . . .

A Wish to Be A Christmas Tree: This charming tale of an overgrown pine always being passed by for Christmas, and what his woodland friends do to help him, is a classic book that should be in everyone’s Christmas book pile.

Good Morning, Snowplow! is a new release that tells the story as the town settles in to bed, one man, his dog, and a trusty snowplow get ready for a night's work. Follow them through slick roads and swirling drifts in this sweet, rhyming book.

Pete the Cat’s 12 Groovy Days of Christmas: A brand new Pete the Cat Christmas book! Join Pete and the gang for one-of-a-kind holiday cheer. He adds a cool-cat spin on a well-known Christmas carol, bringing a hip and energetic spirit to the season.

Fly Guy’s Ninja Christmas: Even reluctant readers will enjoy this fun, zany holiday story about Fly Guy meeting Santa Claus, knocking over the Christmas tree, and showing off his ninja moves!

Can the girls help Robyn find them, before the spirit of Christmas is lost for ever?

Spirit: While walking in a snowstorm, Lizzie sees two dark eyes and a little black nose. It's Spirit, a white German shepherd puppy! Spirit's owners found new homes for all of his brothers and sisters, but they still don't have a place for him. Can Lizzie find a forever home for this helpful little pup?

A Nancy Drew Christmas: Nancy is spending her winter vacation at the most beautiful ski resort in Montana. Everything looks perfect, from the spectacular mountain views to the cozy rooms inside complete with fireplaces and holiday decorations. Unfortunately, not all is as jolly as it seems.

You Go Girl!

Did you know that today is “You Go, Girl” Day?

"You Go, Girl" Day celebrates women who break down gender barriers and stereotypes, and those who become the first of their gender to accomplish something in a field. More specifically, the day celebrates Kathryn Dwyer Sullivan, who became the first American woman to walk in space, in 1984. "You Go, Girl" Day is celebrated on the anniversary of her spacewalk.

So if you are female, today we celebrate YOU! As two girl boss entrepreneurs we love the thought of celebrating the accomplishments of women. Looking back 5 years we never would have imagined being where we are today.

So we decided to check our stacks of books and highlight some of our favorite books with Girls as the main character.

Stop by Whimsy on Main and snatch up any of the books highlighted below for 30% off!

(Thursday, October 11, 2018).

You certainly can’t go wrong with Olivia, Fancy Nancy, Amelia Bedelia and Pinkalicious. We have several books starring these great characters.

The Princess in Black series is a fun early chapter book series that with Princess Magnolia as the one who saves the day. Dory Fantasmagory is a hilarious book about the youngest sibling in a family who really just wants some attention and in the end she gets exactly what she has been looking for. The Second Hand Ranch series features four sisters, Natalie (12), Abby (10), and twins Emily and Grace (9) all do their part to help out and give each animal the second chance it deserves.

Here are a few stand alone and a few series for upper elementary. Jacky Ha-Ha, a class clown who turns to troublemaking--and laughter--to cope with life's challenges. The Secret Destiny of Pixie Piper, is rich with, multigenerational characters and the real and powerful portrayal of grade-school friendships, with all their ups and downs. Oh, and the main character Pixie Piper is a descendant of Mother Goose!

The Girl with More than One Heart is the story of Briana who is forced by the loss of her favorite parent to see all that was once familiar with new eyes, Briana draws on her own imagination, originality, and tender loving heart to discover a surprising path through the storm.  Orphan Island is a National Book Award winner for a tale of nine children on an island with no adults. One day each year a boat comes and drops off a new child and takes the eldest away. A magical book that will leave you deep in thought.

If your middle grade reader has not read the Track series by Jason Reynolds they are missing out! Patina is the follow-up book to Ghost. Patina, or Patty, runs like a flash. She runs for many reasons—to escape the taunts from the kids at the fancy-schmancy new school she’s been sent to since she and her little sister had to stop living with their mom.

The Hoops series is written by WNBA MVP and Olympic gold medalist Elena Delle Donne’s. Elle of the Ball and Full Court Press are two great stories starring Elle a basketball player that is trying to play basketball and navigate all of the other obligations she has as a seventh grader.

Just like Jackie is a story of a young girl and her grandfather. He is the only family she has and he is starting to forget things, sometimes even her name. She knows people can’t find out how bad her grandpa is getting so she is trying to keep them together no matter what. One Wish stars Tanya Fairchild, who may look like an ordinary twelve-year-old, but her life is anything but ordinary. After all, Tanya can see fairies. And real fairies are nothing like the ones in books.

Hallelujah Wonder wants to become one of the first female scientists of the nineteenth century and Wonder at the Edge of the World is her story. This is a perfect book for You Go, Girl day!

Invisible Emmie and Positively Izzy are two graphic novels for middle grade readers about all of the drama, angst and humor of middle school life.

The Backyard Horses series is all about fourth grader Ellie. Join Ellie and her quirky family in their exciting, horse-loving adventures.

I have talked about how much I liked Sea Witch and the Apprentice Witch series in a previous post, both are great books for fantasy book lovers. Resistance is a newly released book by Jennifer Nielsen about Nazi occupied Poland and Chaya is determined to make a difference by joining a resistance cell that invades Nazi supplies.

Friday Barnes Girl Detective is also a series based on an 11 year old girl detective. This exciting mystery series is great for middle grade readers.

If you are looking for a book for middle grade readers that focuses on social justice and digs a little deeper you will find that with Amal Unbound. A story of hope, courage and positive change. The Littlest Bigfoot is a tale of friendship, furry creatures, and finding the place where you belong.

The Legend of the Animal Healer series is such a good one I just had to share it here. It is a series that a lot of kids have not discovered yet and they will love it. Set in an African Wildlife Reserve, this exciting adventure series is great for animal lovers, adventure readers and more.

Chelsea Clinton challenges upper middle schoolers and beyond to Get Informed, Get Inspired and Get Going in It’s Your World. A great introduction to historical fiction for YA readers is Jody Hedlund’s An Uncertain Choice, A Daring Sacrifice and For Love & Honor.

And now for the ultimate inspiration we have a few books by athletes for you. Bethany Hamilton has a remarkable story and her newest book Be Unstoppable is her surfing journey and how she never gave up. Strong is a runner’s guide that will help you find the best version of yourself. Track and field champion Sanya Richards-Ross knows what it takes to achieve the impossible and she shares that in Right on Track. Sanya shares her advice and wisdom when it comes to chasing your dreams.

We had to add some great memoirs and books that speak to us so here are a few great options. We all remember Candace Cameron Bure from Full House and now she has a book called Kind is the New Classy. It is a book that is all about empowering you to define yourself and not let society define you.

The Yellow Envelope is a memoir for all of the travel and adventure seekers. Join Kim and her husband on an unbelievable journey. We all know who the Pioneer Woman is and in her memoir The Pioneer Woman Black Heels and Tractor Wheels you really get to read all about where she came from and how she got to where she is today.

And I had to share the new release Book Girl by Sarah Clarkson. Reading is a gift and books are powerful. Book Girl will draw you into the life-giving journey of becoming a woman who reads and lives well.

For a little more inspiration you can’t got wrong with Braving the Wilderness and You are a Badass. If you live in crazy town like I (Amy) do, Sara thought I needed the Get Your Sh*t together Journal. Not sure it will help me, but your might want to give it a shot. :)

To round out the books I couldn’t finish without adding the life changing book 100 Days to Brave. Take just a few minutes every day for 100 days to get through this book. You won’t regret the little time it takes to start or end your day with this book. We are also adding all of our journals to this discount today. Your life is your story to write!

Spooky Books for October Reading

It is starting to cool off and chilly days make us want to curl up under a warm blanket and read. With October right around the corner, we decided it was a great time to have a Book Sale. The remainder of the month of September we are offering 30% off of ALL BOOKS that we have in stock at Whimsy (this excludes our books that we ordered in, for example: The Wonky Donkey).

We wanted to take some time to highlight a few great book options for kids and teens that are perfect for October.

For the little ones:

A favorite from our library when our kids were little was the Five Little Pumpkins. Now we have a new option for you with Five Little Pumpkins Came Back. This rhyming board book is halloween fun that is not too spooky for your little one. Fancy Nancy: Nancy’s Ghostly Halloween is another great book for your Fancy Nancy fan. Don’t Push the Button! is a favorite book at Whimsy and now there is a Halloween edition with Don’t Push the Button! A Halloween Treat.

Another favorite series for little ones is the “How to Catch a…” series. How to Catch a Monster helps you find out if you are brave enough to catch him? Parents and children will love sharing this fun and inventive picture book, which reminds us that things aren't always as scary as they seem.

Early Readers:

We have some great options for early readers in our I Can Read spinner.

Level 1 and Level 2 books are great for beginning readers. We have some new titles and a couple of classics filled with humor and spookiness for the season.

Beginning Chapter Books:

The next step after early readers are beginning chapter books. We have a lot in the store but I wanted to share a few in the theme of Monsters, Magic and Halloween.

All three of the above books are part of different series. A wonderful thing about a series is getting kids hooked on one and then they have a lot of options for future reading.

Middle and Upper Elementary Chapter Books:

R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps books are perfect for October spooky reading. We have two books from this series in stock at Whimsy. The Headless Ghost is the one of the newest books published in the Goosebumps series. Please Do Not Feed the Weirdo is another rather new book in the Goosebumps Slappyworld series. Two awesome picks for Halloween reading for middle elementary.

Ghost story fans, if you have not read anything by Mary Downing Hahn, you are missing out. Mary Downing Hahn was a favorite author of kids when we were elementary librarians. Took and One for Sorrow and her newest published The Girl in the Locked Room are ghost stories that young readers who like a taste of scary stories will love.

When I picked up A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting, I wasn’t sure if I would like it, but the story of a secret society of Babysitter’s that fight monsters and keep kids safe turned out to be a fun, entertaining read that I think kids will throughly enjoy. The second book, Beasts & Geeks, in this action packed adventure series was published this summer. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I am sure I will enjoy it just as much as the first book. This is not a series for girls just because it is Babysitter’s, boys will love this series, too.

Upper Elementary & Middle School:

I am including upper elementary in this set of books, too. Good readers will be able to read these books and the content is appropriate for both age levels. I don’t like to get caught up on reading levels. I believe that kids need to explore and discover books that they love to read. Sometimes this means that they will read below their level. If kids are reading, I think that is what we should focus on.

This two book series of The Supernormal Sleuthing Service, The Lost Legacy and The Sphinx’s Secret is Monstrous Fun! Three kids and a hotel full of monsters will hook readers that love fantasy books.

Bad Magic and Bad Luck are books 1 and 2 in a great magical series with danger, adventure, mischief, and mystery by Pseudonymous Bosch. What would it be like if all of your teachers were monsters? You think your school is scary? Check out Scary School by Derek the Ghost and Scott M. Fischer.

The Storymakers series takes classic fairytales and gives them a few twists and turns for older kids. Spelled, Wanted and Banished are all about Fairytale survival.

Here are a few more middle school random good reads for October. In the book Wizards of Once from the bestselling author Cressida Cowell of the How to Train Your Dragon series brings us a book where Wizards and Warriors collide. She has a second book in this series coming out in October. Charmed is the first book in the Fairy Tale Reform School series. Another fun book of fairy-tale fun. The House with a Clock in the Walls was just released in theaters, but we all know, the book is always better than the movie. This book has a magic, but also great themes of friendship and family. Sea Witch was just released this summer. I had the opportunity to read this before it was released and it was a very interesting read about the iconic Sea Witch from the Little Mermaid. This book kept me guessing until the end.

The Apprentice Witch is magic and courage in the world of witches where one young witch flunks her assessment and thinks she is doomed. Newly release A Witch Alone is the second book in this series that offers more challenges for young witch Arianwyn. This is a great series for middle grade readers.

Young Adult:

Fantasy is my genre of choice and I love YA, even as an adult. Here are a few spooky, magical favorites for October.

When I picked up this series, A New Darkness, The Dark Army and The Dark Assassin to read, I didn’t realize that there was a whole huge series (13 books) that happened before this 3 book series. It is a little different take on my usual witch as the good guy series. In this series, the witches are bad and the Spook has to protect the people from all different forms of evil. I didn’t need to read The Last Apprentice series first but I have gone back and started to read them now. A new series for a little bit older Harry Potter fans.

Bestselling author Sally Green published The Smoke Thieves, an epic new fantasy series in May. A princess, a soldier, a hunter, a thief and a servant all have their lives collide over a stolen bottle of Dragon Smoke. This is on my to be read list and it has a sequel coming out in May 2019.

When one girl’s best friend is her dead brother’s ghost, romance can be tricky. Invisible Ghosts is a little different twist on the spooky October theme. In this book, all Rose knows is that it’s becoming harder to choose between the boy who makes her feel alive and the brother she isn’t ready to lose. Teen Romance and Ghosts meet in this Summer 2018 release.

And we couldn’t finish an October book suggestion list without including Harry Potter. If you have read the series and loved it, have you read the screenplays for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child or Fantastic Beasts? They are both definitely worth the read and the illustrated editions of the books that have been released are a perfect addition to your Harry Potter Collection. We also just got in the Scratch Magic Hidden Creatures Fantastic Beasts edition!

Upcoming Events at Whimsy

We are so excited for our upcoming events at Whimsy on Main. We have a couple things coming in May and then the summer is filled with creative events for kids, teens and adults!

This post is just a listing of what is upcoming, all of the details of each event are still being finalized. We will keep adding more information as the events get closer.

We were so lucky as kids to have access to all kinds of art supplies. From charcoal to oil pastels, we were able to explore with many different mediums and we want to bring that opportunity to you! Leave the mess for us to clean up and try something new in our creative space.

We also had access to lots of books and learned to love reading. We believe that everyone can be a reader, they just have to find the right books. So this summer we are focusing on some of our very favorites and we are adding elements of art, science and writing to encourage your kids to use their imaginations and fall in love with books!

One of the most exciting things we have going on this summer is taking our Kid's Theatre Company to the big stage! Our summer theatre production will be Snow White and we will be performing on the Milbank High School Theatre Stage.

Pre-registration for our programs will be required so that we can have the appropriate amount of staff and supplies for each event. You can register online or stop by Whimsy on Main to register.

Holiday Menus

One of our favorite things about the holidays is sitting down to develop our menus for our different holiday gatherings. We love to find new recipes every year instead of always having the same menu.

This year for one of our gatherings we are doing a fondue party. When we were kids, this was a holiday tradition but we have not done it for a very long time and our own kids have never experienced this fun tradition. We have been scouring our cookbooks at Whimsy to add to our menus. Here are a few ideas that we can't wait to try this year.

Stop by Whimsy for some new cookbooks. Mention this post and receive 20% off of all cookbooks in the store.

In the cookbook Handwritten Recipes by Michael Popek there are some great breakfast recipes that we are going to try for Christmas morning brunch. The Peanut Butter Cereal Muffins and Universal Waffles from scratch look delicious. For our fondue party we are going to try the Simple Pound Cake recipe.

You can't go wrong with the classic Betty Crocker Picture Cook Book. We remember looking through this cook book at home and picking out cookie recipes to try at Christmastime. The Classic Spritz Cookie recipe is one of the best.

We have a new Holiday Cookies cookbook by Alice Medrich. The Bittersweet Decadence Cookies and Gooey Turtle Bars are on our sweet treats list this year.

The Pioneer Woman Cooks "A Year of Holidays" cookbook has an amazing Christmas section filled with sweets, main dishes and even Christmas Morning Brunch. We have favorite recipes from all of the Pioneer Woman Cookbooks. These cookbooks make great gifts for any of the Chefs and Bakers in your life.

Speaking of great gift books. Jenny Rosenstrach has two great gift books that are filled with wonderful recipes and stories. How to Celebrate Everything takes you through holidays and she shares traditions with you to create with your family and Dinner: A Love Story is a go-to cookbook in our house (especially the pizza) and it is a great read, too.

If you don't love to be in the kitchen and holiday entertaining does not sound fun to you at all, we have some easy options for you, too. We will share those with you tomorrow :)

Christmas Gift Ideas

We have a lot of people stop by Whimsy and they have no idea where to start on their gift list. We are happy to help you find the perfect gift. Here are a few ideas to get you started with your holiday shopping.

Don't forget gifts for the teachers, neighbors and hosts of your holiday gatherings. We have a lot of great ideas to fit all budgets.

Food gifts are great for teachers, neighbors and hosts gifts. We have a lot of choices from dips to soups to drinks.

Fun holiday paper products and yummy holiday scented candles make a great gift.

State gifts are popular and we have a few things for both South Dakota and Minnesota.

We know men are hard to buy for so we found a few things that you can give to the men in your life.

Great books for men just arrived today! Our husbands' love their OOOH Yeah! Socks and would like a pair for every day of the week. Men like to pamper themselves to and we have a great new line from Olivina Men and even if they don't like to admit it, our "Man Bomb" Gift Set is a perfect gift. For that outdoorsy guy, the Swamp Stick and Roadkill Stick are must haves to top off their gift.

For the person that needs to slow down this holiday season and enjoy a little time for themselves, Whimsy has great soaps, bath bombs, lotions, and more.

Goat's Milk soap is a perfect gift, we also have goat's milk lotion. Pamper your tootsies kits with fuzzy socks are packaged up for a fun gift. We have a variety of candles for every mood, size and scent.

Remember your favorites girlfriends with a gift that fits their personality.

Canvas bags, awesome wine glasses, fun socks, notebooks and books that will have you rolling on the floor laughing like only your friends can make you.

For the creative people in your life, we have journals, fun pens and pencils and adult coloring books that help them get out of the box.

It is fun for our family to play new games every Christmas. We are always searching for fun new games that we have not tried before. Here are a few of the newest games that we have added to the shop this Christmas.

Everything from new games to classic games are available at Whimsy. From Trivia games to dice games, we even have marbles. Teach your kids something new or grab your friends for some 80's and 90's Trivia.

We have heard a lot of moms and grandmas say that their teens are hard to buy for so they are just giving them money or gift cards. We have some great ideas to add to those gifts so they have a few things to open at Christmas.

Boom Bowls amplify the sound of their iPod or phone without buying an expensive speaker. Nail kits, potpourri, fun socks, popsockets and more. Let us add a few fun things for the teens on your list.

Tweens are another category that are in that category of hard to buy for since they are getting past the toy phase and are not quite teenagers yet. We asked a few kids in the age group to show us some of their favorite things.

You can't really go wrong with anything that has to do with Farts for boys, right?! Thinking Putty and Poppers have been a hit for kids of all ages.

Don't forget we can put together baskets for you of all sizes and prices to fit all of your gift giving needs. We offer free gift wrapping during the holiday season, too.

Countdown to Christmas: Christmas Book Countdown

One of our favorite family traditions when my kids were little was our Christmas Countdown Books. Over the years we have accumulated a lot of Christmas books in our home library. Every Christmas we would add to our collection so there were new books every holiday season to read.

We have included some free number printables for you and the instructions, if you would like to add this tradition to your family.

Gather all of your holiday and Christmas picture books.

They don't all have to be Christmas, they can be about snowmen or winter. Grab wrapping paper, tape, scissors, your books and print off the numbers.

Wrap each of the books up separately and attach the numbers to each book. If you do not have a lot of books to choose from this year, you can always do this for the last 12 days or however many you have books for.

We have some great options at Whimsy on Main to help you add to your Christmas book collection. You can find them in our store or you can browse through our books in our online store (Free Shipping or store pickup is available).

We hope you love this holiday tradition and we are excited to share more ideas, traditions and recipes without as we Countdown to Christmas at Whimsy on Main!

Dreams Do Come True

We knew that a move was in the near future for our shop, but it happened very quickly and we are starting to get settled in to our new space at 214 S. Main Street.

Last Wednesday night at 10:30 p.m. we packed our final box, called a few college boys and started to move our inventory down Main Street to our new building. Unfortunately it was the coldest day of the year, but with great help we had our move complete at midnight, fed the boys pizza and pop and went to bed happy.

Our moving crew was awesome. Thanks Boys!

Our moving crew was awesome. Thanks Boys!

Monday at 9:00 a.m. we opened our doors in our new location. We have a little work to do, but welcome you to stop in and say hello. We are busy planning a trip to market to fill the new space up with unique products and replenishing our favorite products that sold out during the holidays.

We are busy preparing our event space for fun events that we are planning for 2017. We will be hosting books clubs for kids and adults (Amy has been waiting for years to host a Harry Potter book club). We will also have craft events, Make and Takes, Drop Off Date Nights and Themed Birthday Parties. Stay tuned for our Calendar of Events.

We are so excited to see you in our new space. Let us know what we can do to better serve our community.
